Connecting an external domain to a WordPress site on Copilhost

If you wish to keep your domain name with another registrar but connect it to a WordPress site hosted on Copilhost, follow these steps:

  1. In Copilhost, go to the "Domains" tab and click "New" > "Connect external domain."
  2. A pop-up will appear prompting you to enter the domain name.
  3. You can link it directly to a WordPress site by checking the "Connect to a site" box. Select an existing site or create a new one.
  4. Click "Add domain."

Configuring your DNS settings

To finalize the connection, you will be provided with 4 DNS records to add to your domain's DNS zone at your current registrar.

⚠️ Note: These DNS records will only be generated if you link the external domain to a site.

The records consist of:

  • One TXT record
  • One CNAME record
  • One A record
  • One AAAA record

At your current registrar:

  1. Log in to your registrar's dashboard and locate the DNS Zone or DNS Management section. Feel free to contact their support if you can't find it.
  2. Add a new TXT record. Copy and paste the "Name" (or Host) and "Value" provided by Copilhost. You can easily copy each element by clicking the icons on the right.
  3. Repeat the process for the other 3 records (CNAME, A, and AAAA).

Once done, check your site in an incognito/private window to verify the connection.

If you have any doubts, send a screenshot of your DNS settings to your registrar's support for verification.

Congratulations! Your external domain is now connected to your Copilhost WordPress site! 🎉

"Waiting for Domain" (Attente Domaine) Label

If the "Waiting for Domain" label is still visible after 24 hours, please double-check your DNS records for errors.

⚠️ Common Error: Some registrars require the CNAME value to end with a period "." (e.g., domain.com.).

If your CNAME value is missing the trailing dot, try adding it: this often resolves the issue.

Our team is also available via Live Chat to help you verify your external domain connection! 😇
