How to keep your emails when transferring a domain
Are you planning to transfer your domain name to Copilhost?
Please be aware that this process usually involves the deletion of your existing email accounts at your current (legacy) provider.
When you recreate your email address at Copilhost, the new inbox will be blank.
In this guide, we will walk you through how to recover and migrate your email history.
Case #1: You are currently using RoundCube
At Copilhost, you will manage your emails using the RoundCube webmail interface.
If your current provider also uses RoundCube, you can easily export and re-import your data.
The process is simple:
- Export all emails from your current inbox, folder by folder.
- Start your domain transfer.
- Create your new email account at Copilhost and recreate your folder structure.
- Import your email history into the new folders.
Case #2: You are using a different webmail provider
If your current provider uses a different interface (like Outlook Web, Gmail, or a custom webmail), you will need to check their specific export options.
- Some providers allow you to export all folders at once.
- Others require you to export each folder individually.
Our Recommendation: Whenever possible, export your folders separately to keep your organization intact.
We recommend exporting your emails in mbox (.zip) format.
Steps to follow:
- Export your emails from your current provider (folder by folder, if possible).
- Start your domain transfer.
- Recreate your email account and folders at Copilhost.
- Import your email history into the corresponding folders.
Pro Tip: If your current provider only allows a "bulk export" of all emails, we suggest creating a folder named "Archive" or "Email History" in your new RoundCube inbox. You can then choose to keep it as is or manually sort your emails into new folders later.
Depending on the volume of emails, this process can be time-consuming, so choose the organizational method that best fits your needs.
