Managing your emails during a domain transfer to Copilhost

Professional email addresses (e.g., contact@yourdomain.com) are directly linked to your domain name.

When you transfer a domain from one host to another, the associated email accounts are deleted by the old provider.

You will need to recreate them at Copilhost.

Did you use webmail for your emails?

If you used to log in directly to your webmail (without using a third-party tool like Gmail, Apple Mail, or Outlook), you will automatically lose your email history once the transfer is complete.

To keep your records, you must export your data from your current host before starting the transfer.

Most providers allow exports in .eml or .mbox formats.

Depending on the export format, you will be able to import the content to your new email account at Copilhost.

For a step-by-step guide on how to do this, please refer to our article: "How to keep your email when transfering a domain."

Did you connect your email to an external app?

If you used a mail client (Gmail, Outlook, etc.), your access to old emails depends on your original configuration:

If you used IMAP:

Your emails are synchronized with the server. When the domain is transferred and the accounts are deleted, you risk losing all messages stored on the old server.

We recommend exporting your emails or copying them to a local folder before the transfer.

If you used POP3:

Your emails were downloaded directly to your device (computer or smartphone) upon receipt and are usually removed from the server.

Received emails: You won't lose them; they are already stored locally on your device.

Sent emails/Folders: You may lose access to sent items or custom folders created on the old webmail.

💡 Tip: Save your "Sent" folder manually before transferring.

How to back up your emails before the transfer

To avoid any data loss, consider these options:

  1. Manual Export: Check your current host's help center for an "Export" option (usually to .eml or .mbox).
  2. Local Archiving: If you use Outlook, Thunderbird, or Apple Mail, create a Local Archive folder and move your emails there.
  3. Forwarding: Before the old account is deleted, you can forward critical messages to another personal address.

Creating your new professional inbox at Copilhost

Once the transfer is initiated, you can set up your new inbox:

  1. Go to the "Domains" tab.
  2. Click "Mails" next to your domain name.
  3. Follow the steps to create your new account.
